In many homes, there is a lot of empty space in the attic. While some might use it for storage, it usually just ends up being wasted space. So, if you are planning on making use of the space by finishing your attic and making it into usable space, what should you keep in mind?

The first thing to consider is probably access. Some only have a pull-down ladder for access to their attic, and that isn’t really conducive to a living space. Building a staircase is no simple task, and you should make sure that you don’t build it in such a way that it takes away a lot of space from your top floor just to gain access to a small attic.

Temperature is another concern. If your attic isn’t insulated, it will be affected greatly by the weather. Adding some insulation will save you money and add comfort.

Since the temperature in your attic will be different than lower floors, it is also wise to have it on a separate thermostat so you can adjust the temperature there independently.
